Baitcon Geocaching Map

In relation to my previous question, I have made a Google Map of caches nearby the new Baitcon site. I do this just as a way to take notes and see the big picture, but I'll share. =)

CACHING MAP

I find clicking "hybrid" to be very informative.

This is NOT an exhaustive list, as I ignored anything over 5 miles away with a difficulty over 3. I included caches farther away if they had a lower difficulty (thus better for group hikes).

If this is wanted as a link to the Baitcon site, feel free to take it. Not all cachers are on LJ!

how you do that? i've made a single "my map" with hand drawn things and bullets, but i suspect you used something a trifle more automated?

as soon as i can convince my dumb-pc to remember it's dvd drive, and i can patch mapsource, i'll get my new gps online... then geocaching.com apparently has a way to mass download caches/info... which i can then load as POI apparently - is that what you did'th?

yar :)

I took an hour out monday morning and walked up '0ld highway 2o' (where the guardrail blocking it is just around the corner from where the POD road meets the main path up to the site) it goes for 500 feet or so and meets up with the main highway just opposite the westbound picnic bench area) I estimate the geocache site is about 1/4 mile down the hill from there but did not have the time to walk it. It's an easy walk with the only hard part being a 10 ft climb up an embankment to the edge of the highway

(I l33tized the subject line cuz I wasn't certain whether I should publicize the existence of a b4ck p4ss4ge into the Ab0de too widely, i/e searchably by someone who just knows about the geocache)

If you google 'p1ttsf1eld st4te f0rest summer use trail map', take the top hit and click your way to the gif (clicking on it makes it a little bigger too), and you look at the bottom left you will see a spot where Tac0nic creek, Tac0n1c Skyl1ne, Gr1ff1n, and Be4c0n trails come together with highway 2o. That little black stub of road that goes off south and west does not exist on my GPS map unless I turn on my trails and then it corresponds with '0ld highway 2o'(the trail map must be made from an old base map).

The geocache 'M1ss1ng V1ew B0x' seems to be very close to the eastermost of the two crossings of the Qu4ker trail and the forest boundary. So it seems that one could hike five miles and get to that spot from baitcon (and five miles back).

A possible shorter trip could be: people get dropped off at the end of West St., hike to the cache, and then they could either a) hike back and get picked up at West st, b) hike on down to where gr1ff1n meets the highway and get picked up, or c) go for the gusto and hike all the way back to camp, equalling 3.5, 5, and 7 mile trips respectively. The party could split up at the geocache and the highway crossing, Each person could hike as far as they see fit and wouldn't have to decide until they were actually at those points whether or not to go further.

I'm sorry if the above is a bit disjoint, but I'm getting ready to leave for PennSic and I'm sure I'd forget about all this by the time I got back. At least until shortly before next baitcon.
