more pictures

I've uploaded my pictures from the weekend. (There's also a few shots from our trip there and back, but that's part of my weekend. ;-) I hope to add some captions soon, but there's going to be a lot of names I don't know. If we didn't meet, please feel free to drop me a note here or via the album site's guestbook. My relatively-new camera and I are still trying to get this focus thing down, so many of the shots are not as sharp as I would like. This album site lets visitors see (and download) the original images; if you want them, be my guest. I've also added a few of the pictures to my collection of icon-sized images (copy-and-paste HTML for easy use here) but this page may have grown to the point that my ISP is not serving it properly. (The same HTML and image files load fine from my local disk.)And yes, I've got some kind of thing for taking pictures of people taking pictures.
I'll be making some entries about the weekend in my own journal. I had fun and ate well, and I hope to see you again next year. (And play some of those instruments we brought along that never got out of their cases.)
[Edit Tue Aug 2]: 16 photos missed my first upload. (I knew the count was low, but sometimes the site is slow to update.) They're there now.

Date: 2005-08-02 03:53 am (UTC)Thank You! I'm glad to share them.
You have a great eye for composition and framing.
I just take pictures of things that look interesting to me, and try to fill the frame with them (or include surroundings for context). I don't always succeed, but my subjects usually aren't posing. I don't have any formal training, but I have a good time.
Can I ask what sort of camera it was, btw?
My previous digicam was a Casio QV-3500EX, also 3 megapix. It took too long to focus (but no worse than most), and I constantly wanted more than 3X zoom. (I was accustomed to film SLRs with interchangeable lenses). Sound recording would have also been helpful for quick notes with the shots. The QV fried (literal puff of smoke!) -- I blame the dog, not the camera, but that's another story.
My main disappointment with the PS S1 is that the focus is often just not there. (I can't really tell until after I transfer the shots to a computer.) Sometimes it is good; usually good with flash, and the shots I took Saturday night with a tripod and without flash (the Platypus doll, the empty stage, and one of Keith) came out really well, IMHO. I don't think the problem is my steadiness, because things were fine with the Casio. I haven't seen that the image stabilization helps, and I've seen no description of how it works -- what trade-offs there must be in image quality, cycle time, etc. I miss having a macro mode too. I could make do with cropping -- if the images were focused/sharp.

Date: 2005-08-02 04:05 am (UTC)I've been pretty pleased with the camera, though low-light auto-focus is almost non existent, and I have -no- image stabilization :(. It really is a problem on those long-distance low-light shots.

Date: 2005-08-03 01:34 am (UTC)One of the constraints when I was shopping was that I wanted to keep using my 1GB MicroDrive (http://www.steves-digicams.com/microdrive.html). It's CompactFlash II format, but slightly thicker than a CFII RAM card. When I bought it, in comparison to RAM it was half the cost per byte, faster, and a little harder on batteries. (They're up to 6GB now!) I was happy with it, and I liked being able to keep 6 months worth of photos in the camera -- like another layer of backup. (Also roomy enough to use the digicam as a USB disk in a pinch.) In any case, that (and more zoom) limited what cameras I looked at -- which was a help, because there is so much out there. (If I hadn't found anything suitable at a good price, I would have considered other memory formats.)

Date: 2005-08-02 03:32 pm (UTC)It was good to meet you too. I'd been enjoying your posts here, and I think you were giving me my best idea of what my first Baitcon might be like. And we're looking forward to exploring that beautiful cook book! We do hope to be back next year. (
