A question about permethrin

Am packing, am packing! And printed out the packing lists for Baitcon and SwingOut New Hampshire*.

And wandered over to the ticks page, and was reminded that the Off people are lying about deet and ticks, and am now staring at the permethrin bit, and wondering, "my plan was to be wearing socks with leggings or tights. Is this insufficient, given that the permethrin bit is talking about spraying said socks if over pants?"

Does the intended strategy, sans permethrin, simply risk bringing ticks back into my tent?

(I'm assuming I can get some at Home Depot, but I'm actually leaving town Wednesday...)

*btw will be briefly in Bostonish between and an unknown amount of time in Bostonish after Labor Day

The socks over pants thing keeps them from getting onto your skin to bite you, but not from hitching a ride on your clothing. The permetherin on your clothing kills them dead. A suggestion for the clothing is to wear light colors so that they'll be easier to see if they do hitch a ride, and you can get rid of them before going into your tent.

Agh, based on this it doesn't look like spraying permethrin on tights is a valid strategy. I don't have time nor a space to pretreat clothes...

Other than the time issue, what was wrong with spraying on tights? Also, when I played with permethrin in June, I found that a) they dry relatively quickly (just get things damp rather than soaked) and dried even quicker still when I hung a bunch of clothes on hangers on a bar and then had a box fan blowing on them.

Evenly spraying tights seemed....difficult, and far easier to do whilst wearing said tights.
I'm functionally leaving in a couple hours. Might be able to spend some permethrin time at my first stop south of Albany.

Also...not fully sure what I'll be wearing at Baitcon. Although I guess if I just get the socks and tights.

Also a bit worried about the cats until washed 6x issue.

Although I probably can get some at rei on my way out of town today.

Repellent should be applied outdoors and before clothing is worn; hang clothing, spray and let dry two hours (four hours in humid conditions)
Avoid contact with skin and eyes

General consensus that I can find on the 'net from product information is that once the permethrin is dried from initial application, it poses no more danger to cats.

Did you try REI? Their website says it's available at their stores in Boston, Reading, Framingham, and Hingham.

I was hoping to detour to an rei today, but everything went crazy. If applying at the mountain is a thing would love to also buy off you, as I don't know what shopping I can manage tomorrow from where I will be

Ended up buying a 6 oz for $9 at eastern mountain sports on manhattan. Would still be happy to buy an extra rei off you. Dunno if they had a better choice, but the guy "helping" me kept telling me that permethrin was another word for deet, until I just told him I was looking for stuff one sprays on clothes and he found it for me and then again said it was the same as deet. So further questions seemed pointless. :headdesk:

I just found a 6 oz aerosol for $9 at Eastern Mountain Sports on Manhattan; if you do get to rei that is so much better a price I'd still like to buy an extra, 'cause I don't get the idea this will handle much.
