a happy ending, in my mind, would be one in which said cop, if this is actually true, was found to be unfit to carrying around their gun and badge and dismissed from the force.

Perhaps he needs to relocate. I'd suggest Little Rock, or maybe Flint. Jasper or Red Rocks would also work.
