So all of my Baitcon flavors that are going to be mixed in advance are ready and waiting to go. There were 2 humorous moments that I had to share with you all.

Last night, when I checked on the frozen baggies of ceviche sorbet from the previous night, I discovered that you should never put a baggie full of liquid into a freezer drawer that is a wire basket. Why? Because before it freezes the baggie full of liquid will conform to the shape of the wire, then freeze solid with the wire embedded in it like a tree that has grown around a chainlink fence. Oops! Let that be a lesson to those of us with freezer drawers made of wire.

The other humorous moment came this morning when I checked the fridge to see how my chocolate saffron ganache had done as it cooled overnight. As it turned out, what was a nice smooth sauce last night with the consistency of Heinz 57 was a mostly solid mass like a lump of playdough this morning. For a moment, I had the irresistable urgh to take it out of its bag and play with it like a lump of modelling clay. Can you just imagine the mess that would have made as the chocolate warmed and melted in my hands? Heh. I can just imagine calling in to work to explain that I was going to be late because I was trying to wash the chocolate off my hands.....Sometimes my inner 5 year old really isn't very far from the surface.

Due to the fact that I have 4 pounds of the commodity, I think I will use the 2 pounds of Idaho huckleberries for an ice cream and 2 pounds of St. Helens huckleberries for the sorbet which I introduced last time.
Due to the nature of the watermelon, I need to wait until tomorrow to start prepping the watermelon sake sorbet. I may need more sake.
This evening will be spent on helping [livejournal.com profile] jbsegal with shopping. I may also prep the Spicy Brains tonight.

So, um...

So, um.
For several Baitcons I've brought habanero'd Amaretto for-to make an ice cream of the same flavor. Suddenly I'm leaving in well under 48 hours and don't have habaneros nor a clear idea where my amaretto is and I only just found a small bottle of amaretto.

If I get habaneros today I'm not sure whether that gives enough time for the spice to infuse. OTOH by the time I would be in Boston a week later* the liqueur would be quite spicy, but I don't know if there will be anywhere appropriate to bring it.

Or I could just buy some Frangelico and bring that for-to make something nonspicy instead. I'd imagine it would go 1-1 in a recipe that ordinarily would use Amaretto. Also last time I was successful in a highly alcoholic nondairy nonspicy fleetingly frozen Amaretto/Coco Lopez/Coconut milk mixture.

Anybody care? Any comments?

And re the rain, Aigh. (Tent's been in the trunk since last Baitcon.)

* looking like I'll arrive Tuesday 7/24. Will folk be at Diesel? Also, while I'm writing here, I'm probably going to send a bunch more postcards from up thataway. Right now I'm just going for volume** rather than farflung - I'll bring a bunch from mostly DC but if anybody happens to bring other places, (near or far) yay :).
** the last week or so of waiting is a particularly good time to be pleasantly distracting...

So far, no one other than me has expressed any willingness to lead a geocaching walk. (Irony: I have very VERY little actual geocaching experience and am undoubtedly less qualified than those insisting they are not somehow "qualified")

No one other than me has expressed a willingness to drive to a trailhead for sure, and I think only have one "maybe if I feel like it at the moment."

That limits the likelihood of any organized geocaching (or hiking), since my teensy car really only has space for two people besides hubby and me.

I don't know that there will be a "message board" type area at the site, but if there is, I will try to at least put up some sort of sign-up sheet so if there are any changes of heart, you can sign up to form a small group. Thus, interested persons will at least be able to identify each other and perhaps coordinate. If you are still interested, please look for it even if you emailed or commented to me, as I won't be coordinating outings after all.

See y'all there.

Exactly which instruments I bring to Baitcon will be a last-minute decision, depending partly on how much cargo space there is for them and how much I feel like carrying and dealing with. But I figured I'd put an ear out there and ask: are there any instruments anyone is specifically hoping I'll bring, either because you want hear them in a jam session or because you want to borrow them? No guarantees, since, as I said, cargo space will be a factor, but if anyone cares then I'll factor those wishes into the packing process.

OTOH, if everybody planning to make music this weekend is already bringing everything they'll want to play, then I'll just grab the woodwinds, a couple kinds of guitar, and a drum.

(If there's a safe place to do so, I'll leave instruments out where folks who want to borrow them can easily grab them.)

Hi folks,

In my post a bit back, I mentioned at the bottom needing a 1 or 2pm ride back to Boston on Sunday, but maybe I didn't emphasize it enough. I'm a little concerned that no one has replied on that subject, so I'll try again here and on Suspects. Any early-return folk have vehicle space for me? Am packing pretty light, etc.
