I realized looking at the flavor lists from years past that at this point, collectively we've had enough offerings in the veggie department to make up almost a full salad. I think that's pretty cool and would actually really enjoy trying out a Salad Bar Sundae of all the veggie flavors put into one bowl together.

So, for those of you who've made tomato, cucumber, caremelized onion, and some of the other savory veggie flavors, what do you think, could we do it?

As much as I dislike the savory flavors, especially the veggie ones, I dare someone to make a ranch flavored ice cream.

*sighs in relief*
I mean, that's unfortunate.

"going to"?
There's been a special seat ever since the ceviche sorbet :)

I should own up to that link. I want to see something with stinky cheese!

Blue cheese ice cream with some fruit in it might actually not suck.

Lettuce give it a try

I made the Sugar Snap Pea (completely unplanned -- I'd brought the peas for snacking) which surprisingly turned out as something I was happy to eat. :)

Don't see why you shouldn't give it a go (though I would be unlikely to partake in the mix myself).

I'll have Roast Beet Buttermilk ice cream at Baitcon and you're welcome to add it to the Salad Bar.

Oh Yes Indeed. I did a batch for [livejournal.com profile] sariel_t at her request for her birthday and she loves it. Now I'm thinking of a more elaborate version of the flavor with hots and other fun things which could be called The Doom That Came To Baitcon, riffing on a story title (http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/thedoomthatcametosarnath.htm) from one of my favorite writers. And of course it would have to be green.

Anchovies are fine; it's the tentacles that get me.

The intent was to have it taste like borscht and according to one Russian-born friend it does indeed.

Tomato is doable. It was based on a recipe for grape ice cream.

That sounds very amusing.

I repeat my plea of "please, a savory tasting!"

'Cause I think there are a lot of flavors that are really good on their own, but suffer mightily when tasted in and among the sweet ones.

I support the concept of separate savory and sweet tastings.

My idea is savory, but I'm not sure Bagels-Lox-and-Capers fits with the salad theme. Maybe there could be a "salad bar session" of savory ice creams on Sunday afternoon...?

Definitely seconded. Most of the savories I don't mind, and several I've even enjoyed... but none once melted/mixed in with sweet ones. Doing a separate serving of just the savories sounds like an excellent idea to me.

I was also thinking that Monday morning we could serve some breakfast ice creams such as bagel, and perhaps pancake or - oh no, my homemade sausage is *not* going to be used for that! - sausage. :)

Now we have to figure out a flavor that works with chunks of wild boar sausage blended in.

Basil and thyme, maybe some potato?

A simple beet sorbet might be quite lovely. A pretty color, too!

Parsnip, maybe? I'm not convinced I froze enough local ones but I think it might still be possible to grab some at Market Basket.

A parsnip ice cream or sorbet should totally be doable. Definitely strain out the fibrous bits though.

Is reminded of the first attempt at Horseradish lo these many years ago, and shudders slightly at the mention of fibrous bits.

Hmmm. Salad bar flavors...chickpea/hummus ice cream? Hard-boiled egg ice cream? Green pepper sorbet? :)

Of course, you'd have to have sunflower seeds and croutons for toppings!
